Amazon and Microsoft are both preparing to release tablet devices with displays sized above 11-inch and their orders are expected to benefit Taiwan's upstream supply chain and boost their revenues in the second half of the year, according to sources from the upstream supply chain.
Microsoft reportedly is planning to develop two next-generation Surface 2-in-1 devices, one coming with a 12-inch display and the other a 13- to 14-inch screen.
Both devices will feature high-end hardware, providing good profits to related component suppliers, the sources said, adding the order visibility for the Surface has already reached the end of the year.
Amazon is also planning a 12-inch tablet, but its shipment volume will be limited, the sources said. The company has only placed orders for less than 100,000 panels for the device a month, mainly looking to test the waters.
The large-size tablet's panel is supplied by a Taiwan-based touch panel maker, the sources said. Although Amazon is estimated to be able to ship 4-5 million tablets in a year, most of them are 7- to 8-inch models, with their panels being supplied by China-based touch panel makers. |
