Silicon Motion Technology president and CEO Wallace Kou has expressed optimism about demand for SSDs and expects the market to move forward with the availability of 3D NAND flash memory.

With chipmakers' production processes advancing toward 3D NAND technologies, prices of SSDs are able to come down, Kou said. Cheaper SSDs will help drive increased PC penetration, Kou indicated.

The ratio of SSDs used in PCs is still below 20%, meaning it has huge room for growth, Kou said.

Demand for SSDs for use in industral and gaming applications also looks promising, Kou suggested. Overall shipments of SSDs are forecast to increase another 30-40% in 2015 from about 60-70 million units in 2014, Kou said.

In addition, Silicon Motion has enhanced its product offerings to include not only microSD device controller chips but also chips designed into embedded applications, such as eMMC devices, Kou noted. The product mix changes are to respond to the market surge of smartphones.

Silicon Motion has seen sales generated from its eMMC offering account for almost half of the company's total flash memory unit revenues, Kou said.

In other news, Silicon Motion with its SSD controllers has reportedly entered the supply chain of leading memory chipmakers such as SK Hynix and Micron, and China-based vendors including Huawei and ZTE.
