Annual financial information has been released by Samsung, and it's not looking that great for the company. Samsung has come back with its lowest annual profit in three years for 2014. Smaller smartphone sales numbers can be blamed for a good chunk of the smaller profit figure. A high profit of 36.8 trillion won was recorded in 2013.

Since then, profit has slipped by 32 percent to just 25 trillion won. Profit was also lower in the fourth quarter of the year. Year-over-year profits from the smartphone division at Samsung were down by 64 percent to 1.96 trillion won for the quarter. That means the company has reported five quarters of declining mobile profit. Some of the shortfalls in the mobile division were counteracted by a stronger semiconductor sales report.

Samsung remains a leading company in the smartphone market, but its market share is falling in some areas as competitors take over. Apple has reported much stronger sales for the iPhone and other Android manufacturers are also doing well, especially in Asia.
