Silicon Motion Technology has announced net sales of US$52.8 million for the first quarter of 2014, increasing 1% from the previous quarter, and beating its guidance for a flat performance or a 10% sequential decline in revenues for the quarter.
  Net income (non-GAAP) reached US$5.4 million or US$0.16 per diluted ADS in the first quarter compared to US$10.2 million or US$0.30 per diluted ADS in a quarter earlier.
  Sales of the company's SSD and embedded solutions increased sequentially in the first quarter and grew by over 60% as compared to the same period a year ago.
  Silicon Motion also began commercial sales of its TLC eMMC 4.5 controllers to a third NAND flash partner and began mass production of its next generation eMMC 5.0 controllers in the first quarter, the company added.
  The company also secured over 30 new design-wins for its eMMC controllers from the smartphone, tablet, notebook and gaming console sectors in the first quarter.
  It has also secured design-wins from one major global PC OEM as well as a NAND flash maker for its SATA3 client SSD controller chips, the company added.
  Meanwhile, the company expects its revenues to grow 10-15% sequentially in the second quarter, with gross margin ranging from 48-50%.
