Lenovo shifted 60% of the production for its enterprise ThinkPad notebook series from Wistron and other ODMs to LCFC (Hefei) Electronics Technology, its joint venture with Compal Electronics, in the second half of 2013, according to sources with Taiwan's supply chain. But as the China-based LCFC's capacity and yield rates have fallen short of original expectation, Lenovo is likely to resume ThinkPad production at Wistron and the other original ODMs, the sources said.
With Lenovo and Compal holding 51% and 49% of its stakes, LCFC started producing notebooks and all-in-one PCs towards the end of 2012, signaling Lenovo's intention to hike in-house production, the sources indicated.
Lenovo has been shifting ThinkPad-related R&D and component procurement from Yamato Lab, Lenovo's Japan-based R&D unit, to Lenovo's R&D unit in Beijing, the sources said. But the shift has seen issues in terms of component procurement, resulting in LCFC's inability to meet Lenovo's demand, the sources commented.
