China-based TCL Communication Technology Holdings aims to enhance its presence in China's smartphone market by ramping up the production of TD-LTE models starting September, according to the company.
TCL shipped 20.6 million handsets worldwide in the first half of 2013, taking the seventh position in the global handset vendor rankings, according to IDC. However, the company's performance lagged behind fellow companies ZTE, Huawei, Lenovo and Yulong (Coolpad).
In the smartphone space, TCL shipped only 4.7 million smartphones in the first half, including 2.4 million units in China. The volume of smartphones shipped in China represented a decline of 15% on year in sales volume and 33% in sales value. TCL obviously has missed out on the growth momentum of China's smartphones industry.
In addition to revamping its retail channels, TCL has also teamed up with B2C operator 360 Buy to promote its TD-LTE family smartphones, said the company.
TCL posted net profits of HK$38 million (US$1.26 million) on sales of HK$6.4 billion in the second quarter of 2013, ending its three consecutive quarterly losses, according to company data.
