MediaTek is expected to revise upward its handset-IC shipment target for 2013, according to industry sources, which judge from China's booming smartphone market.
The smartphone market in China expanded to more than 80 million units in the first quarter of 2013, said the sources. In April alone, the market is set to top 30 million units, the sources indicated. Based on the positive figures, China's smartphone market is forecast to reach 350-400 million units in all of 2013, the sources noted.
MediaTek has seen its monthly shipments of smartphone solutions climb to 15 million units on average, with customer orders exceeding the level to about 20 million units a month, the sources indicated. The firm should provide an upward revision to its full-year shipments at an upcoming investors meeting.
MediaTek previously set a shipment target of about 200 million smartphone solutions for 2013, compared to the about 110 million units shipped last year.
