Toshiba Corp. one of the world’s largest manufacturers of NAND flash memory, on Wednesday said it had begun to ship its new-generation solid-state drives based on multi-level cell (MLC) NAND flash made using 19nm process technology. The new product series offer similar levels of performance as the drives unveiled in mid-2012, but boost data protection and, possibly, improve some other things.
Toshiba’s THNSNH family addresses the storage, performance and power efficiency demands of high-end notebooks, desktops all-in-one desktop PCs and industrial systems. Just like the previous-gen THNSNF-series, the new breed includes 2.5” (both 7mm and 9.5mm) SSDs with 60GB, 128GB, 256GB and 512GB capacities as well as mSATA solid-state drives with 60GB, 128GB and 256GB capacities. Performance of the new drives is in line with similar-class hardware: up to 534MB/s read speed as well as up to 482MB/s write speed.
As usually, Toshiba’s SSDs are based on Toshiba’s own NAND flash memory as well as proprietary controller developed by the company in house. Toshiba’s main innovation with the THNSNH series includes data protection through use of quadruple swing-by code (QSBC) as well as proprietary robust and highly-efficient error correction code technology.
Toshiba’s new generation SSDs based on 19nm NAND flash are already available in Europe and will shortly reach stores in different parts of the world.
