A week after reports surfaced that hundreds of workers were about to be discharged in Micron Technology's plant in the southern Israeli city of Kiryat Gat, the company has confirmed that the facility is facing a sale and may even be shut down.
"Micron is working to find alternatives for the plant," the company said in a statement.
One of the options is locating a buyer for the Israel facility. If that fails, Micron said, it would gradually reduce its production volumes in the plant until 2015.
"As a result, the company will adjust its manpower levels to the production volumes," the company said.
The move implies that Micron has in fact decided to halt its production activity in Israel, and the plant is expected to be sold or shut down by 2015.
Micron employs some 1,300 in its huge Kiryat Gat plant, located next to the Intel facility, and most or all of these workers may lose their jobs.
Micron Technology is an American multinational corporation which produces many forms of semiconductor memory devices.
"Micron is committed to help the workers affected by the move, and will provide them with compensation, a bonus package and reassignment services," the company said. |
