MediaTek has launched MT5931, a SoC with integration of 802.11n Wi-Fi MAC, baseband, radio, embedded PU and power management unit. The chip also integrates several external components including power amplifier (PA), low noise amplifier (LNA) and T/R switch to meet required slimness and low-power consumption by producers of smartphones and other portable devices, said the IC design house.
"With the introduction of the MT5931, legacy consumer devices can be easily migrated to Wi-Fi enabled smart devices with the minimum design and manufacturing efforts," said SR Tsai, GM of the wireless connectivity business unit at MediaTek, in a statement.
MediaTek revealed that its new single-chip solution has entered mass production and shipping to lead customers in large quantities now.
In other news, MediaTek has enjoyed rising shipments of its MT6573 solutions for smartphones. Company president Hsieh Ching-chiang said during a recent investors conference that shipments of MediaTek's MT6573 chips are expected to remain strong during the fourth quarter of 2011, though orders of its other solutions will see decreases due to seasonal factors.
MediaTek estimated fourth-quarter revenues at NT$22.9-24.5 billion (US$763-816 million), compared to the NT$23.38 billion posted in the third quarter.
