According to industry sources, the Indian government is studying new measures to impose import restrictions on various types of laptops, tablets, and PCs. Importers must apply for permission in advance before importing and selling in the Indian market, hoping to reduce excessive dependence on imports and encourage PC brand giants such as Apple, Dell, and Lenovo to expand production capacity in India.
India is currently discussing relevant measures and seeking opinions from all parties. The new regulations are expected to be implemented in January 2025, but it is not ruled out that the implementation schedule may be delayed due to other factors.
India currently implements "free import but mandatory login registration" for laptops, tablets, and PCs. Importers must input quantity, value, and other information into the Import Management System (IMS) before the goods arrive at the port, obtain import authorization, and proceed with customs clearance operations. The import restrictions for personal computers will not include desktop computers, and the authorization is valid until September 2024, which has now been extended to December 31, 2024.
