Acer founder Stan Shih at a recent event has noted that the Acer Group's current business operation is consisted of three major segments: the PC business; the businesses derived from PCs such as virtual reality (VR) and gaming devices; and emerging businesses operated by subsidiaries, and to gain opportunities for development for these subsidiaries, they have to be internationalized.

Shih noted that Acer spun off several business units as subsidiaries such as Wistron and AU Optronics in 1990s but were not able to combine these subsidiaries' business operation. Now, Acer has a mechanism to help subsidiaries correspond with each other.

Acer's retail distributor subsidiary Weblink International will begin tapping overseas markets such as in Southeast Asia, and will integrate with some of Acer's existing channel connection to integrate resources. Meanwhile, Acer Cyber Security, an information security service provider also has potential for an overseas expansion with the certification of (ISC)2, Shih noted.

For emerging businesses, to integrate Taiwan's medical technology with artificial intelligence (AI) expertise and cloud computing to assist the medical care to achieve efficient operation and better profit is a key direction for Acer, Shih said. Acer will provide newly developed medical instruments integrated with AI and cloud computing for hospitals, Shih indicated. Company chairman Jason Chen also pointed out that Acer is currently cooperating with hospitals in Taiwan to use Acer-developed super computers in genetic sequencing to determine whether there is genetic mutation. The test can be done in several hours, a lot shorter than the traditional two-week period.
