The latest smartphone industry report from Kantar shows Samsung is leading the market in the United States, but Apple's share did increase compared to last year. Apple's share rose to 34% in the latest quarter, up 4.7 points over 2016. Samsung, however, saw a quarterly increase from 32.9% to 36.2%.

Kantar says the Galaxy S8 was helpful in securing the lead position for Samsung, though the smartphone had less of an impact than was anticipated.

In terms of individual phones, the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are the top smartphones in the country. The S7 is in fourth place.
