Apple has lost a patent infringement case and has been ordered to pay $506 million to the University of Wisconsin. This ruling doubled the damages figure initially handed down by a jury. The latest decision stems from Apple's original loss to the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation in 2015.

Despite losing the battle, US District Judge William Conley says Apple continued to infringe on the patent through 2016. That's why the company now owes $272 million more than the original $234 million verdict.

Apple was found to have infringed on a patent with its iPhones. Some versions of the phone used processor technology that had originally been patented by University of Wisconsin professor Gurindar Sohi in 1998.
