Samsung is getting more serious with its chip foundry business. After hearing that the company will focus on 6nm manufacturing process to have an edge over TSMC next year, we are now hearing that the South Korean giant made around $1 billion worth of investments in its production facilities in Austin, Texas, as of this month.

Samsung hopes enhance its system LIS chip business along with its powerful memory chip business. With this investment, Samsung is gunning for the 7nm production node for next year and 4nm chipsets in 2020. The FinFET architecture will be ditched with the 4nm LPP process. Instead, Samsung will use a new architecture called Multi Bridge Channel FET.
