Taiwan-based DRAM module manufacturers have made inroads into the markets for solid-state drives (SSD) and higher end DRAM modules targeted at servers designed for cloud, or even embedded MMC (eMMC) solutions, to diversify their product portfolios, according to Simon Chen, chairman and president of Adata Technology.
As these products require sufficient R&D engineering and resources, the dedicated memory module sector will go through another restructuring with less-competitive players being eliminated, Chen said.
New products being displayed by memory module makers at the ongoing Computex 2011 are being developed in tandem with mainstream products and industry trends such as tablet PCs, cloud computing and USB 3.0 applications, said Chen, noting that the SSD products rolled out by SanDisk and Adata have both entered the supply chain of Asustek Computer's UX-series notebook lineup.
Adata also plans to venture into the eMMC solution segment as fellow company Phison Electronics has teamed up with Kingston Technology to develop eMMC products, Chen added.
