Silicon Motion Technology Corporation (NasdaqGS: SIMO) is a fabless semiconductor company that designs, develops and markets high performance, low-power semiconductor solutions for multimedia consumer electronics applications, such as mobile phones, digital cameras, notebook PCs, personal multimedia players, and personal navigation devices.
Founded in 1995 in San Jose, California, Silicon Motion is currently headquartered in Taiwan, with design centers and sales offices in Taiwan, Korea, China, and the US, and a branch office in Japan.
Silicon Motion has three product lines: mobile storage, mobile communications, and multimedia SoCs. Mobile storage products include microcontrollers used in managing NAND flash memory storage products such as flash memory cards, USB flash drives, solid state drives (SSDs), embedded flash applications, and card readers. Mobile communications products include mobile TV IC solutions, CDMA RFICs, and electronic toll collection RFICs. Multimedia SoCs include products that support portable multimedia players, DAB systems, PC cameras, and embedded graphics applications.
Silicon Motion is a global leader in microcontrollers for NAND flash storage devices and silicon TV tuners for mobile phones. The company is a pioneer in NAND flash controller solutions and shipped its first flash memory card controller in 1998. Silicon Motion has a decade of expertise developing best-in class controller technologies that include proprietary error correction codes (ECC) and wear-leveling algorithms. Currently, more flash memory cards sold world-wide use Silicon Motion controllers than any other. Silicon Motion launched its first SSD controller in 2007 and shipped over a million units in that year. Silicon Motion is also a pioneer in advanced silicon TV tuners for mobile phones and has been shipping in volume mobile TV tuners since 2005. Silicon Motion is currently a leading mobile TV tuner supplier in Korea, one of the most advanced mobile TV market in the world, and is a leading supplier to both Samsung and LG.
