Micron Technology will focus on technology transitions during fiscal year 2019, with the company's DRAM fabs in Taiwan set to transition to more-advanced 1y/1znm process technologies, according to Manish Bhatia, executive VP of global operations for the US memory chip vendor.

Bhatia disclosed Micron's factory site in Taoyuan, northern Taiwan has entered mass production of chips built using 1xnm process technology. The company will start producing chips using a newer 1ynm process node at the site later in 2018 followed by mass production in 2019.

Micron has also moved 1xnm process technology to mass production at its factory site in Taichung, central Taiwan since 2018. The site will move forward transitioning to a newer 1znm node in 2019 with mass production scheduled for 2020 and beyond, Bhatia said.

Micron estimated its fiscal 2019 capex at about US$10.5 billion, up from US$8.2 billion in fiscal 2018. While focusing on technology transitions, the company will intend to maintain existing wafer capacity, Bhatia indicated. Micron will continue to raise its bit supply through technology transitions, Bhatia added.

Bhatia made the remarks during a ceremony to mark the opening of Micron's backend site in Taichung.
